Mumbai’s iconic theatre Central Plaza shuts down during lockdown

central plaza cinema

South Mumbai says goodbye to a very much established cinema hall “Central Plaza”  which was one of the  prime spots for cinema goers and entertainment buffs.

Central Cinema also known as Central Plaza was opened on 3rd January 1936 is no more active. This lockdown we heard the biggest brands and business tycoons going insolvent and got shut permanently. They have issued a public notice for the closure and its a sad news for South Mumbai residents and movie-goers. The current pandemic is also one of the major reasons due to which they have shut down. Apart from this the heavy maintenance to manage the interiors, the staff salary, the losses incurred when a movie flops, the huge electricity bills and much more were a difficult part to solve.

Also one of the major reasons was the broadening of OTT platforms like the Amazon / Netflix / Hotstar / MX player which are doing quite well in 2020. The movies releasing on OTT platforms are liked by the audience nowadays and people have subscribed them in  huge numbers. Majorly people prefer to stay indoor and enjoy a series or a movie nowadays. The concept of OTT platforms have hit the cinema halls a lot and made them a much bigger replacement option. Like the android phones with great cameras replaced the old Kodak cameras, like the Uber/Ola’s have replaced those yellow-black taxis with tampered meters, IPL matches replaced one/two day test matches, OTT platforms can also replace and take over the cinema halls some day.

The Central Plaza theatre will always be missed and will be very very special for the mumbaikars as there are few moments of your life you spent here. The best and worst movies you enjoyed here with your friends and family. It will be tough to see this cinema hall getting closed permanently where you watched movies since your childhood. Now the audience has become much smarter than before and obviously they spot real talents and great content on OTT platforms. Also people are tired of spotting the same actors getting movies even after giving back to back flops, its quite good to see the change evolving in the near future.
